The INET Singapore 2012 Conference will be held on November 16 & 17, 2012 at Orchard Parade Hotel, Singapore. This year’s conference touches on a medium that is close to us all: The Social Media.

The usage of social media, such as facebook and twitter, and mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, became a significant part of everyday life for many with the development and active use of geographical and local data systems such as GPS. It seems only natural that SoLoMo has become a new trendy term for today’s marketing scene.

SoLoMo – which stands for “social (media), local and mobile”- literally refers to the use and integration of social media, local and mobile, primarily for business purposes. Some of the popular SoLoMo tool examples are Groupon and Foursquare, and these tools utilise geo-targeting strategy which aims at consumers in certain geographical locations.

There is no doubt that SoLoMo presents an array of exciting opportunities, in the business, social and education arenas. SoLoMo, by nature, is a rapidly evolving mechanism, and individuals and organisations who can adapt and integrate it well into their systems will have a better chance to get ahead in their respective fields.

However, as SoLoMo is a relatively new concept, there has been very little study done for the topic. Many people are clueless about potential risks and challenges caused by the level of private information sharing and surveillance while many things are still experimental and growing at a rate beyond imagination. The implication for regulations, laws and policies is immense while there are inherent security risks on the internet space and issues of freedom of speech.

In INET Singapore 2012: The Social Internet, the participants will have a greater exposure to the current status of SoLoMo in local context and discuss the future directions for Singapore internet scene.
